As of the time of writing, the estimated POWERBALL© jackpot has climbed to $1.7 billion, making it the third-largest jackpot in U.S. Lottery history. With an estimated cash value of $770.3 million, this draw has captured attention nationwide — and West Virginia players are already seeing significant wins.
If you’re considering entering the draw, whether online or at a retailer, here’s what you need to know about how the game works, the recent momentum, and how you can play the POWERBALL yourself.
Recent West Virginia wins highlight the growing jackpot momentum
While, as of September 5, no player has matched all six numbers to claim the jackpot, there have been several major prize winners — including in West Virginia. A $100,000 winning POWERBALL© ticket was purchased through the West Virginia Lottery iPlay app for the Wednesday, September 3, 2025, drawing. That follows a $50,000 winner the prior weekend, also sold in the state. Alongside this was a $1 million retail winner.
These prizes were among 36 tickets that matched for $100,000 nationwide in that same draw. In total, 11 tickets across the country won $1 million, and five of those were boosted to $2 million through the Power Play® option.
The current POWERBALL© jackpot run began after the last grand prize win on May 31, 2025, and has now reached 42 consecutive drawings without a jackpot hit, setting a new record for the longest POWERBALL© streak without a winner.
How to play POWERBALL© in West Virginia
POWERBALL© tickets are $2 per play, with an optional Power Play add-on for an additional $1. The Power Play multiplier applies to all non-jackpot prizes and can significantly increase your winnings — up to $2 million for the second prize.
To play, choose:
- Five white ball numbers from 1 to 69
- One red POWERBALL© number from 1 to 26
You can pick your numbers manually or use the Quick Pick option for randomly generated selections. If you play online through the West Virginia Lottery iPlay app or official website, you’ll receive a digital confirmation of your ticket stored safely in your account.
Whether you choose to play online or at a Lottery retailer, ticket sales close at 9:59 p.m. ET on draw days. POWERBALL© drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET.
Playing online through the iPlay app
The West Virginia Lottery iPlay platform provides a secure and reliable way to purchase POWERBALL© tickets from anywhere in the state. Players must be physically located within West Virginia and meet the minimum age requirement of 18.
Playing through the iPlay app also allows for:
- Instant access to draw results
- Automatic prize notifications
- Secure prize claims for eligible winnings
- Digital record of all ticket purchases
You can download the iPlay app from the App Store, or for Android users, via the official West Virginia Lottery website.
Responsible play
As POWERBALL© participation increases, West Virginia Lottery officials continue to emphasize responsible play. Acting Director David Bradley stated, “This is such an exciting time in the Lottery world… but as much as we enjoy these moments, we want to remind everyone how important it is to always play responsibly.”
Players are also reminded to check older tickets and claim prizes before they expire. For instance, a $1 million winning ticket sold in Hurricane for a March 2025 drawing is approaching its final claim date of September 8, 2025.
Where this jackpot ranks in history
At the time of writing, the $1.7 billion POWERBALL© jackpot ranks third on the list of U.S. Lottery records, trailing only:
- $2.04 billion POWERBALL© – November 2022 (California)
- $1.765 billion POWERBALL© – October 2023 (California)
POWERBALL© continues to be one of the most widely played draw games in the U.S., with tickets available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game has nine prize levels, with overall odds of winning any prize set at one in 24.9, and jackpot odds at one in 292.2 million. These odds have not changed since 2015.
